Twice this year, I was given the amazing opportunity to do an introduction to floristry with the Aleit Academy’s second year students.
We covered theory on floral design elements, pricing and value and how to condition flowers/foliage and prep containers. Then the students had the opportunity to put their theory into practice and had to ‘order’ flowers from their wholesaler (me), to fit a given budget and brief for a make believe charity event. They had to present their budgets and then the following day, condition their purchases and design their centrepieces. We also looked at what questions to ask of a client when doing a briefing session as well as what florists carry in their toolboxes.
They also had a chance to choose a wedding brief and had to select flowers from a pre-selected set of options and design a bridal bouquet and buttonhole to match the brief on the 3rd day of their workshop.
They did a fantastic job, considering many of them had never worked with flowers before at all.
my thanks to the Academy for allowing me to share some valuable knowledge with their students way before they enter the industry.
